Better Together (B2G) SAN Design Best Practices

Dell | EqualLogic iSCSI SAN Design utilizing Dell PowerEdge M1000e
Blade Enclosure and Force10 Switches in a Full End-to-End
Data Center Bridging (DCB) Shared LAN and SAN Environment

Hello EQL Family,

Just released!! Best Practices white paper detailing a full end-to-end DCB solution
utilizing M1000e Blade Enclosure, Force10 10Gb switches, MXL, IOA, and s4810.
This paper will discuss different options for designing a DCB enabled SAN.

The different SAN Designs can be compared based on the following:

  • Administration
  • Performance
  • High Availability
  • Scalability

WHAT IS THIS PAPER ABOUT

The SAN designs in this paper converge both SAN and LAN into a single network fabric
using Data Center Bridging (DCB). The final SAN design includes the IO Aggregator (IOA)
Module which is pre-integrated with Dell’s Active System 800.

The Active System 800 solution, a member of Dell Active Infrastructure family, is a converged
infrastructure solution that has been designed and validated by Dell™ Engineering. It is
available to be racked, cabled, and delivered to your site to speed deployment. Dell Services
will deploy and configure the solution tailored for business needs, so that the solution is ready
to be integrated into your datacenter. Active System 800 is offered in configurations with
either VMware® vSphere® (Active System 800v) or Microsoft® Windows Server® 2012
with Hyper-V® role enabled (Active System 800m) hypervisors.

CONSIDERATIONS

The network is the fundamental resource that connects the assorted devices together to form the
datacenter Ethernet infrastructure. These devices include server hardware and operating system,
the applications that run on the host, and the storage systems that host application data.
Sharing this Ethernet infrastructure with multiple traffic types requires a fairness mechanism
to provide bandwidth allocation and flow control for each type of traffic. Without such a mechanism,
the Local Area Network (LAN) traffic and the Storage Area Network (SAN) traffic would have
to be separated onto their own dedicated networks.

There were three categories of SAN designs for M1000e blade chassis integration:

  1. Blade IOM only - The EqualLogic PS Series array member ports are directly connected to
the blade IOM switch ports within the blade chassis.
Dual Force10 MXL switches in the M1000e chassis were used.
  2. Top-Of-Rack(TOR) Only– The storage ports and blade server host ports are directly connected
to ToR switches. A 10 GbE pass-through I/O Module is used to connect the host ports to the
    ToR switches.
Dual Force10 S4810P switches were used as the ToR switches.
  3. Blade IOM switch with TOR switch - The EqualLogic PS Series array member ports are
connected to a tier of ToR switches while the server blade host ports are connected to
a separate tier of bladeIOM switches in the M1000e blade chassis.
Force10 S4810P switches were used as the ToR switches while two different blade
IOM switches were tested - the Force10 MXL and the PowerEdge M I/O Aggregator.

In conclusion, the different design categories are summarized and compared according to
administration, high availability, performance, and scalability.

Comparing the power efficiency of the PowerEdge R820 and System x3750 M4 rack servers

$

Authored by Bruce Wagner, Solutions Performance Analysis

Did you know that the 2U, four-socket PowerEdge R820 server delivers superior power efficiency over its direct competitor, the IBM System x3750 M4?

The Dell Solutions Performance Analysis team configured both systems just how many datacenter customers might order them. We used the identical
Intel Xeon processors, and similar memory, network interfaces and storage RAID controllers. The IBM eXFlash storage option was pitted against Dell’s industry
standard 2.5” SSD storage with its similar power consumption specifications and in order to highlight any advantage IBM’s proprietary storage held.

In summary, our testing showed that the PowerEdge R820 has 15% better overall power efficiency than the System x3750 M4.  The x3750 M4 consumed significantly more input power at all workload levels. There was no measurable benefit from IBM’s eXFlash storage option since the SPECpower_ssj2008 server efficiency benchmark principally exercises the processor and memory subsystems.

See the full whitepaper for the detailed test configuration, methodology and findings.

Customers frequently plan for a system utilization level of 70% in order to accommodate any spikes in workload demand.  At that level, the R820 drew 69 fewer watts than the System x3750 M4.

In even a small to medium-sized datacenter, that 69 watts of server power plus the associated extra cooling really adds up in energy cost. This power and cooling double benefit is one reason why Dell continually invests in power efficient server design.

Simply comparing each system’s online store advertised pricing shows the R820’s cost is 18% less than the x3750 M4.  Combining that with its higher power efficiency, the Dell PowerEdge R820 is a 22% lower total cost of ownership solution compared to the IBM System x3750 M4.

Required SPEC disclosure information: R820 scores: (2,853,822 ssj_ops and 568 W) @ 100% target load and 4617 overall ssj_ops/watt vs. x3750 M4: (2,906,948 ssj_ops and 604W) @ 100% and 4009 overall ssj_ops/watt.  Comparison based on results by Dell Labs Feb 2013.  SPEC® and the benchmark name SPECpower_ssj® are registered trademarks of the Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation.  For more information about SPECpower, see www.spec.org/power_ssj2008/.

Enhancing Dell’s Networking End User Experience

by Dianne Roman, Enterprise Customer Loyalty

In February 2012, Enterprise Customer Loyalty posted a blog titled “Firmware Upgrade and Software Quality: Minimizing Network Downtime” highlighting the importance of proactive knowledge sharing and new product testing and validation to improve our customers’ networking experience.  Shortly thereafter, the Enterprise Solutions Networking team rolled out a plan to drive and track 18 key End-to-End (E2E) ‘customer experience’ initiatives to improve easy access to critical information and resources around our PowerConnect products. Specifically,

  • Firmware Quality
  • Lack of organized and consistent documentation (reference architectures, white papers, deployment guides)
  • Dell networking configuration issues
  • Gaps in configuration and deployment support (telephone, knowledge base articles, and documentation)

Between July and November 2012, 15 of 18 initiatives have been implemented.

Key wins include:

  • E2E Firmware and Interoperability extended testing for development and sustaining products.
  • Creating whitepapers and how-to videos for general info, setup/configuration & firmware upgrade to provide critical, easy to use information to enable customers to troubleshoot issues on their own; ultimately reducing the number of customer related calls.
  • Creating reference architectures and deep deployment guides to ensure products are correctly positioned so the customers are getting the right tools for the job.

Also, industry data (Source: HBR July 2010) indicate customers are twice as likely to be promoters when their effort to resolve a technical support issue is low therefore continued emphasis on educating our customers and providing them with tools to become self-sufficient in troubleshooting issues is vital to improving overall perception of our Network product quality.  We will continue to accelerate our pace to deliver reference architecture, configuration guides, and training videos that align with our customers’ IT needs and expectations.

If you have any suggestions on how we can improve your networking or PowerConnect experience, let us know or post your idea on Ideastorm.com

Getting the Right Mix for Hadoop

$

This blog was written by Armando Acosta

While Hadoop is designed to run on industry standard hardware, specific applications still require different CPU-to-memory-to-disk ratios to maximize application performance, and economy.

So how can you get the right mix?

The PowerEdge C8000 series allows the mixing and matching of compute, storage, and coprocessor/GPU sleds in one 4U shared infrastructure chassis. It holds up to eight single-wide compute PowerEdge C8220 server sleds, up to four double-wide PowerEdge C8220X compute/GPU sleds or PowerEdge C8000XD storage sleds; or a combination of those sleds, plus two power sleds.

This design allows the right balance of CPU-to-memory-to-disk ratio and large-scale storage nodes requiring 24 or more hard drives to run big data applications faster. The flexible PowerEdge C8000 can run Master, Slave, and Edge Hadoop nodes and multiple workloads from the same chassis or across racks, allowing for better use of IT resources and more efficient use of space while increasing Hadoop POD compute/storage density and performance.

The following diagram from Cloudera shows how servers can be optimally configured according to workload:

For a storage-optimized configuration, connect a PowerEdge C8220 compute sled or the C8220X compute/GPU sled with an LSI® 9202 HBA, then connect it to one or more C8000XD storage sleds. Choose drive size, type, hot-plug/non-hot-plug capabilities and connections to reach up to 36TB per sled, with up to four sleds per chassis for 144TB. The PowerEdge C8000XD storage sled is available with up to 12 x 2.5” or 3.5” SAS/SATA or 24 x 2.5” SSD hot-plug drives. Up to four storage sleds can be cascaded via mini SAS ports to deliver up to 144TB of storage capacity.

When workload needs change, simply re-mix the compute, storage, and coprocessor/GPU sleds inside one flexible building block - the C8000 chassis. The result: performance and economy delivered via data center efficiency per square foot, performance per watt, and power utilization per rack.

Transform Your Windows Desktops with a Flexible, Converged Active System Solution from Dell and VMware

This blog was written by John Kelly, Solutions Architecture Consultant for Dell Desktop Virtualization Solutions.

By now most of you reading this blog will be familiar with a number of trends that are becoming very prevalent in the enterprise IT space at the moment. In the data center, there’s a move towards automated infrastructure deployment,
end-to-end automation and converged networking; meanwhile in the end-user domain, we’ve seen the proliferation of BYOD, with users looking for access to their workspaces at any location and at any time. Desktop virtualization is the key technology that allows organizations to gain synergies these 2 technology trends and Dell and VMware have just released a reference architecture that is a real game changer in this space … so read on for some more information.

Dell’s Active System 800v solution has been around for a few months now and it’s a pretty neat solution. A couple of highlights of the Active System 800v include:

  • Dell PowerEdge M I/O Aggregator (with full IEEE Data Center Bridging compliance for Fiber Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) and enhanced iSCSI).
  • Active System Manager, providing functionality such as automated infrastructure deployment and end-to-end automation.
  • Solution is available to be racked, cabled, and delivered to your site to speed deployment.

Not surprisingly, the compelling advantages offered by the above functionality (as well as numerous other features described here) have resulted in Dell creating reference architectures (RAs) for many use cases, including Microsoft Sharepoint Server 2010 and Microsoft Lync Server 2010; however one of the most interesting reference architectures for Active System 800v is the VMware View 5.1 RA that was published in late 2012 for the VMware View 5.1 release (extra marks if you recall that the View 5.1 release included some really valuable functionality such as View Storage Accelerator and integration with vCenter Operations (vCOps) Manager for View).

So that’s where the new RA comes in – hot on the heels of the recent announcement on the release of VMware Horizon View 5.2 (yes, VMware has now changed the name slightly to signal the inclusion of View in the Horizon suite, where it is joined by Horizon Mirage and Horizon Workspace). The engineering team at Dell has just published an update RA for VMware Horizon View 5.2 on Active System 800v. To fully appreciate the significance of this RA, it is useful to describe some of
the new features in Horizon View 5.2:

  • Innovative Mobile Desktop Experience
  • Improved Large-Scale Management
  • Improved Storage Capacity Efficiency and Utilization
  • Windows 8 Support
  • Hardware-Accelerated 3-D Graphics
  • VMware Horizon Suite Integration
  • VMware Horizon Workspace Integration
  • Enhanced Media Services for Unified Communications

A quick analysis of the above list of features immediately shows that it’s quite an impressive feature-set, delivering some really important benefits from an end-user, IT and corporate perspective. End-users will love Windows 8 support and access to hardware-accelerated graphics; IT managers will be impressed with the improved large-scale management and everybody in the enterprise (yes, particularly the accountants) will be grateful for the improved storage capacity efficiency and utilization and for the enhanced unified communications support.

So the deal is sealed, it’s been decided that we can wait no longer – Horizon View 5.2 means that my organization needs to move to virtual desktops. But wait … desktop virtualization – isn’t that difficult and expensive to deploy? Can we really afford to scale those hurdles? At Dell, our message has always been that this is not the case (and you may visit our Desktop Virtualization Solutions page to see why not). Now with our DVS Enterprise Active Systems 800 for Horizon View reference architecture, we’ve taken another step to simplifying your journey to the benefits that can be derived from desktop virtualization by delivering a converged infrastructure solution that has been designed and validated by Dell™ Engineering for desktop virtualization. It is available to be racked, cabled, and delivered to your site to speed deployment. Dell Services will deploy and configure the solution tailored for business needs, so that the solution is ready to be integrated into your datacenter.

The DVS Enterprise Active Systems 800 for Horizon View reference architecture is available here, read it and take the first step to a technically robust, easily implemented solution that will deliver an excellent end-user experience to your users and a secure and easily-managed solution for your IT department.

Are you an IT administrator?  Do you have Dell PowerEdge 12th or 11th generation servers and enjoy the automatically and remotely server deployment and management provided by Dell's LifeCycle Controller (LC)?

If your answer is yes, do you know your server deployment and management workflow can be optimized and your server deployment time can be greatly reduced?

Or you manage a data center with many servers and are still struggling with conventional way of server deployment and management since the conventional way of server deployment and management can be tedious, need physical access to the servers, not automatic, and is error prone?

No matter what, if you have Dell PowerEdge 12th or 11th generation servers, you should have already been impressed by the powerful function of the remote API exposed by Dell's LifeCycle Controller (LC) and enjoyed the convenience brought by its powerful capability in server deployment and management.  Dell LC provides programmatically, remotely, and automatically server deployment and management by using WSMAN / winrm command.  By following our Best Practice Guide, you probably have written your workflow for your server deployment and management.  Your server deployment and management is automatic and remote now.  You save a lot of time in server deployment and management and it is never error prone.

Sounds everything is so good now?  However, believe me that things can be even better!

Dell has published a whitepaper on Workflow Optimization.  The white paper tells you in details how to optimize workflow.

The following is a summary of what you are going to find in this white paper:

  • Classify jobs into three different classes
  • Divide a job into different subjobs
  • Stack jobs/subjobs
  • Detailed steps to optimize the workflow  based on job classification, subjobs and job/subjob stack
  • General optimization rules
  • List of  subjobs of each known individual job, such as FCoE boot, iSCSI boot etc

By following these steps, you can optimize your workflow and greatly reduce your server deployment and management time.  Depending on your workflow, your server deployment may be 2 – 3 times faster after workflow optimization.

Too good to be true?  Follow the detail steps in the white paper and try by yourself!
