Interview with Nikola Dipanov from Red Hat

$

Dell: Could you please introduce yourself?

Nikola Dipanov: I work as a senior software engineer for Red Hat and I do mostly Nova development. Nova is the compute part of OpenStack.

Q: Tell us about the Red Hat distribution of OpenStack.

A: Red Hat is coming up with own distribution of OpenStack. It’s called RDO and it is community supported. We provide very latest stable release of OpenStack and we provide community support for it. It’s supposed to be around Red Hat based platform like CentOS, Scientific Linux or Fedora. If you are interested in running or trying OpenStack on any of these platforms you should definitely check it out.

Q: What is different in the Central and Eastern Europe compared to other regions, when it comes to cloud and OpenStack?

A: I guess that definitely there is huge interest nowadays in cloud in CEE region and I think it’s in good shape. It’s maybe lagging slightly behind U.S. and Western Europe, but I don’t think that’s a problem. I see a lot of interest from universities, from Ph.D. students, from people doing their master degree and I think there is a lot of good education in this region. I think it will definitely pick up

Q: Thank you very much.

Dell TechCenter Rockstar Spotlight: Michael E Davis on ‘Falling into IT’

$

0

When Peter offered me the opportunity to take the next Rockstar spotlight with Michael I jumped on it.  Through a couple of in person meetings and connections in social media I’ve had the opportunity to see what a diverse and talented professional Michael is.  Michael is always participating in IT related tweet chats and giving his honest opinion. His twitter feed is humorous, often helpful and gives a glimpse into some of his great photography.  Michael is also a Formula One fan and we had the opportunity to hang out at Austin’s debut F1 race last year.

Without further ado, here’s the low-down on Michael Davis, a Dell TechCenter Rockstar now 2-years in a row!

Michael Davis

Please tell us about yourself. What is your current role and where do you work?

I’m the Virtual Infrastructure Administrator for University IT Services at the University of Arkansas Fayetteville campus.  My main focus is on the server and desktop virtualization environments we provide to business units and colleges; but I also help out with managing our SAN, file servers and other systems as needed.

Outside of work I keep myself busy serving as the Education Chair on the Photographic Society of Northwest Arkansas’ board arranging classes that hopefully will appeal to the first time camera owner as well the seasoned pro.  During the fall I also run the video board (baby Jumbotron) for all Junior High, Junior Varsity and Varsity football games for the Fayetteville School District’s athletic department; as a sports fan I love being able to do this and watch kids progress over a 5 year span, and then get signed by major college programs.

What is your IT blog about, and how did you get started?

My blog really isn’t IT focused, it is mostly a place for me to share recipes I felt were worth sharing.  But that same sense of sharing knowledge is what has led to the handful of tech related posts I’ve made.  While the VMware world seems to be filled with numerous blogs documenting fixes for almost every issue I’ve ever ran into, the opposite has been my experience with Citrix products.  So when I’ve been able to find a repeatable solution to a problem in our environment I feel compelled to put it out there on the off chance someone else also runs into it.

How did you get involved in the IT industry?  Do you specialize in any particular IT technology?

I quite literally fell into it; one summer in junior high I was jumping over a flower bed and landed awkwardly leading to a leg brace for a couple months.  I’d already been using computers to do homework and play games but started digging into how to fix/build/upgrade them to pass the time.  This led to building and fixing computers for family friends and my parent’s coworkers for a few years.  Then during my senior year as the expense of college was rearing its ugly head I was offered a job fixing computers for the school district through their Youth Apprenticeship program.  14 years later here I am, still applying the same problem solving skills I honed early on just at a grander scale.

Overall I’m a generalist, but I do focus heavily on whatever aspect of technology interests me the most at a particular time.  I find staying more general helps to understand the big picture and see how your ‘cog’ fits into achieving the goal of the organization.

What are the biggest IT challenges that you face?

Hands down it has to be funding.  The majority of what I do is infrastructure related, and infrastructure isn’t *** so it is harder to get funded versus the latest flashy end user facing gadget.

Do you find Dell TechCenter helpful in your role?

Absolutely!  The product specific sites and blogs make for a quick stop to get up to speed on new or updated solutions.  I particularly enjoy the Tuesday chats with the engineers and managers of specific products; the ability to query those who know a product best and offer feedback is invaluable.

What would you like to see on Dell TechCenter in the future?

More design docs / best practices guides on cross stack solutions.  Setting up an initial 500 seat View rollout with plans to scale to several thousand users, then go with X, Y & Z hardware type examples.

iDRAC7 now supports Default Password Warning feature

$

0

This blog post is written by Shine KA and Mondeep Dutta from Dell iDRAC team

iDRAC7 1.30.30 has improved its security features over its predecessors. One such feature is User Default Password Warning.  Default username and password of iDRAC is widely known to everyone. It is important to change the default password or any user can access the server and make changes using default credentials. With Default Password Warning feature in iDRAC, you will be warned when iDRAC have default username and password (root/calvin).The warning is displayed when below conditions are met:

  1. Default Password Warning feature is in enabled state.
  2. The logged-in user has the rights to changeiDRAC user’s password. i.e. “Configure Users” privilege.
  3. iDRAC Local User “root” is Enabled.
  4. iDRAC Local User “root” have password as “calvin”

Whenever a user, with the Configure User privilege, logs in to iDRAC or SSH/Telnet or executes racadm commands remotely and the default credentials are configured, a warning message will be displayed. Because GUI and SSH/Telnet users logs in once per session they will see a single warning message for each session. Because remote racadm users login for every command they will see a warning message for every command.

While having default credentials makes iDRAC insecure, iDRAC can become even more insecure if it can be accessed from the internet (or other large network where different trust boundaries exist) when the default credentials are configured. If any of the following items is configured the possibility exists that iDRAC could go from being inaccessible on the internet to being accessible. Hence the warning message will also be displayed when below mentioned network properties are changed using local racadm.

  1. Changing either the IPv4 or IPv6 IP address
  2. Changing the hostname
  3. Changing the gateway IP or the net mask
  4. Flexaddress change (applies only to blades)
  5. Enabling DHCP / Auto config

iDRAC7 Web GUI

Whenever a user, with the Configure User privilege, logs in to iDRAC via Web GUI and the default credentials are configured, the Default Password Warning Message will be displayed. From this page user can either change the password for root user or user can keep default password and proceed with iDRAC login. There will be an option to disable Default Password Warning feature on this page. This page will not be shown, if user changes the password for user “root” or disables the Default Password Warning feature.

If user decides to “Keep Default Password” and clicks on Continue, the iDRAC home page will load. But this page will be displayed every time any user tries to login to iDRAC7 with default credentials in place. So, to avoid this page from loading, user can select “Do not show this warning again” from Default Password warning page.

Default Password Warning feature can be enabled or disabled from iDRAC Overview -> iDRAC Settings -> User Authentication -> Local Users page under the section titled “Default Password Warning”.

RACADM

With Remote RACADM, Default Password  Warning message is displayed with every command. You need to install racadm (Local or Remote) from OM 7.2 or later to use this feature

For FW RACADM (SSH, Telnet or Serial) Default Password Warning Message will be displayed once after Login

The Default Password Warning  will be shown in Local Racadm when you modify some network settings

Using RACADM you can disable this feature by disabling Default Password Warning.

Interview with Bruce Davie at VMware

Dell: Can you introduce yourself?

Bruce Davie: I am a principal engineer at VMware working in the Networking and Security Business Unit. That’s a business unit that was formed after VMware acquired Nicira and so we work on network virtualization.

Q: How is VMware contributing to OpenStack?

A: As I said, the business unit I work in was formed after the acquisition of Nicira, and Nicira has actually been a contributor to OpenStack for a long time through the Quantum projects. And the technical lead of the quantum project is Dan Wendlandt who is one of my co-workers. We have been contributing to Quantum and this essentially led to that becoming a full blown part of the OpenStack project. And more recently VMware started contributing as well on the compute side, so that the VMware hypervisor (vSphere) can also now be supported within OpenStack. Those are the two main areas where VMware contributes.

Q: Do you see any differences in the way OpenStack is adopted in the emerging regions compared to developed countries?

A: I would say there's obviously lot of interest here based on the size of the crowd at events such as OpenStack Day CEE, probably 250 people. But at the same time there was relatively a small show of hands when Jonathan Bryce asked how many people have got some exposure to OpenStack. It seems like we are in the early stages here, whereas it may be a bit more of a mature market in the U.S.

Q: Okay. Thank you very much.

A: Thanks.

Auto Dedicated NIC feature in iDRAC7

$
0
0

By Kareem Fazal and Virender Sharma of the Dell iDRAC team

The new 12th generation Dell PowerEdge servers offer Auto Dedicated NIC feature in iDRAC7 version 1.3x.3x which helps the customers to automatically configure the iDRAC7 network connection.

Many customers route iDRAC management traffic via the shared LOM to save on ports and limit cables.  Dell offers additional flexibility in this case via the Auto Dedicated NIC feature, as described in this paper.  Now, customers can connect a crash cart directly to the dedicated NIC port, and the DRAC will automatically switch from shared mode to dedicated mode, and then back again once the cable has been removed.

In iDRAC versions 1.2x.2x and below, selection of iDRAC network connection could either be a dedicated NIC port or a shared LOM port. To use the dedicated port, it was necessary to change the setting via the iDRAC web interface or command line, as well as physically connect a cable to the server.

With latest iDRAC versions 1.3x.3x and above, the Auto Dedicated NIC feature is available as an enhanced functionality and does not change the existing behavior of manual NIC selection. User intervention to change the NIC setting using the iDRAC7 web interface or a command line is not needed as Auto Dedicated NIC switches to the correct network automatically.

 Requirements:

  • Feature is offered on PowerEdge rack and tower servers only (not on blades)
  • iDRAC7 Enterprise license is required to enable the feature
  • For PowerEdge rack and tower servers 500 series and below (R520, R420, T420, R320, T320), add-in card is required to have the Dedicated NIC port.
  • If iDRAC7 Enterprise license is ordered at point of sale, then add-in card comes along with the server.
  • If iDRAC7 Enterprise license is ordered later than point of sale, then add-in card will need to be ordered.

This feature is disabled by default. It can be enabled using following interfaces:

  • iDRAC Web Interface
  • RACADM
  • WSMAN
  • HII

Following matrix describes the behavior when Auto Dedicated NIC is either on or off, plus the different NIC selections and their failover modes:

Citrix announces the release of Citrix XenServer 6.2.0; and Surprise, XenServer is now Open Source?

$
0
0

In my last blog I talked about the differences between Xen, XCP, and XenServer and how those names are used interchangeably and incorrectly a lot. XenServer is not Xen, and while XCP is XenServer, it's not the latest version of XenServer. The differences between XCP and XenServer led to confusion in the X-Stack communities. With the launch of XenServer 6.2, Citrix has taken another step to clear things up and set the stage for a CLOUDY future.

The first step was back on April 15th when Citrix announced the Xen Project, the original Open Source Hypervisor and modern era corner stone to distributive computing (THE CLOUD), was moved to the Linux Foundation Collaborative Projects. The Linux Foundation launched a new web site, www.xenproject.org, "to focus upon the development and support of an open source hypervisor and related components." Go there if you want to play with Xen. Those of you brave enough to do so know who you are, and you are my xe-hero(s).

Citrix's next step? Surprise, with the XenServer 6.2 launch announcement, June 25th, it was clear that Citrix was to go beyond keeping the orginal promise that Xen remain open source. XCP was already open sourced for some time, but now XenServer and XCP would merge as a single open source hypervisor solution.

Citrix simplified the offering, replacing multiple editions with one full featured download, available for FREE. This sets the stage for experimentation, proof of concepts, and general access to one of the most interesting technologies available today. Anyone can get started and it won't cost you a dime. I can see innovative little clouds popping up everywhere.

If you want or need to take advantage of technical support and the automated update features in XenCenter, Citrix has updated their licensing on a per socket basis. With licensing, you will enjoy seamless installation of security and feature hotfixes. Otherwise, Hotfixes can be installed on unlicensed hosts using the xe command line interface.

There is a new community portal to support XenServer, go to www.xenserver.org and sign up, contribute, innovate.

For information on Dell PowerEdge Servers already certified to run XenServer 6.2 review the Hardware Compatibility List at http://hcl.xensource.com/

Interview with Dave Jaffe on the Dell | Intel Cloud Acceleration Program

$
0
0

Dell: Can you please introduce yourself?

Dave Jaffe: I’m a solutions architect on the Dell | Intel Cloud Acceleration Program within the Dell Solution Centers. I’ve been with Dell for over 16 years, having worked previously in performance and several other solution-oriented teams.

Q: Can you tell us about Dell Solution Centers?

A: The Dell Solution Centers are global centers where customers come in to learn about the whole range of Dell solutions – servers, storage, networking, security, software. During the visit (which may occur remotely through videoconferencing) the customer may receive a briefing on a particular topic, participate in a day-long architectural design session where different Dell experts will whiteboard solutions to the customer’s IT pain points, or test drive the Dell solutions in a one- to two-week proof of concept.

Q: What is the Dell | Intel Cloud Acceleration Program?

A: This is a program within the Dell Solution Centers, jointly funded with Intel, to demonstrate Dell solutions around Cloud and Big Data. In Cloud, the primary solution is based on the open source OpenStack cloud software. In Big Data, the focus is on Hadoop and its ecosystem of tools such as HBase, Hive, Pig, etc. The Dell | Intel Cloud Acceleration Program (DICAP) manages a lab in the Round Rock, TX campus with several hundred servers for Cloud and Big Data clusters for customer proof-of-concepts.

Q: What expertise does Dell provide specifically around big data?

A: In addition to the DICAP solution architects, the Enterprise Systems Group Revolutionary Cloud and Big Data team develops solutions with Hadoop and OpenStack as well as a bare-metal deployment tool called Crowbar. Dell Professional Services has a data analytics team that works with customers to analyze their data needs and then design and build appropriate Big Data solutions. Finally our Dell Software Group has a set of tools to help manage and analyze Big Data such as Kitenga.

Q: Can you tell us about Dell’s collaboration with Stack IQ?

A: StackIQ provides Dell’s customers with cluster deployment and management tools that complement the Dell Big Data solutions. StackIQ Cluster Manager enables users to rapidly deploy and manage large clusters for many different Big Data applications.

Q: How do customers benefit from this Proof of Concept?

A: In the POC documented in the white paper Dell and StackIQ worked together to solve a key need for a mutual customer in the financial data arena. The customer wished to compare the functionality and performance of two different key-value pair databases, HBase and Cassandra, running on a 60-datanode Dell Big Data cluster. StackIQ Cluster Manager was used to install one application and then the second application on the data nodes. When a change to the disk caching policy was requested by the customer Cluster Manager was used to rapidly reconfigure the nodes already in the cluster. New nodes being added to the cluster automatically received the new policy.

Q: Which industries/use cases are you targeting?

A: The Dell/StackIQ solution is a horizontal technology that can be used for all the different industries that are looking to take advantage of the mountain of data they are collecting: finance, healthcare, oil and gas, energy, web, etc.

Q: Thank you very much!

A: You’re welcome.

Dell’s Fluid Cache for DAS helps Performance, Scale and Budget - three major IT issues of today

Dell’s Fluid Cache for DAS helps

Traditionally most of the IT organizations deploy servers such Dell’s PowerEdge R720 with lots of JBODS in Direct Attached Storage (DAS) environment and try to optimize the platform to achieve maximum user load, yet keeping the average response time (ART) as low as possible.  Growth in performance and storage size requirements becomes a cost prohibitive proposition most of the time in these deployments.

One of the ways to optimize these configurations is to add Flash SSDs and Fluid Cache for DAS in the solution mix.  This new solution then allows DAS to grow at comparatively cheaper cost yet plenty of room for performance hungry application Year over Year.

  • The new Fluid Cache for DAS based configuration when tested,  got following results
    • Fluid Cache based solution delivered approximately 60% more Transactions Per Second (TPS) compared to the baseline configuration
    • Fluid Cache based solution delivered approximately 95% better average response time over the baseline at 3100 user load
    • Fluid Cache for DAS based solution delivered approximately 34% more user load compared to the baseline.

Charts below depict these results:

With Fluid Cache based solution, it’s not necessary to fill-up all drive bays (in the test results above only two were used), the empty bays can be filled-in as needed ensuring future growth requirements for performance. Also, the backend storage capacity can scale at will, still room for future performance growth by increasing the caching capacity and yet get performance.

As an illustration, in a typical OLTP environment, Average Response Time (ART) required is 2 seconds. The test result below indicates, that for a concurrent user load of 3100, the baseline configuration allows ART up to 1.712 seconds; however with Fluid Cache based solution in the mix, the ART at 3100 user load is 0.09 seconds, giving a lot more room to grow the concurrent user load.

  • Summarizing the key benefits Fluid Cache delivers:
    • The cache pool supports read and write caching, accelerate writes, read-after-writes and re-reads while providing high availability, most solutions only impact random reads.
    • Offers cache management that is fully integrated with Dell storage management
    • Allows for the provisioning of cache for enhanced dataset performance and your storage to meet the need for greater capacity
    • The cache pool stays “warm” through reboots and the cache pool is highly available and resilient to failures
    • And above all, add Cache capacity on the fly using the hot pluggable Dell express Flash Drives.

For a demonstration of Fluid Cache for DAS, Dell TechCenter will be hosting a live webinar on June 23rd at 3PM Central US time

June and July 2013 were full of new additions to the Dell Systems Management portfolio of products, which help you more easily monitor, manage, and update your PowerEdge servers.  If you missed any of the updates, this post will get you up to speed on new features that will save you time on the job.

Following up on the huge Dell PowerEdge VRTX announcement in June... in July we wrote many blogs and wiki articles, posted white papers, & hosted several chat sessions about systems management relating to the VRTX solution.  Additionally, we created new videos showing off the Dell Chassis Management Controller for Dell PowerEdge VRTX, which allows you to both view system health and assign shared resources among up to 4 blades in the VRTX chassis.

Also in July, we discussed the much anticipated Dell OpenManage Essentials v1.2 release, which in addition to now supporting PowerEdge VRTX, allows you to use Microsoft Windows Server 2012 as the OS for the OME management station, and introduces  a new mapping feature that allows you to keep tabs on your remotely managed servers, no matter where in the world they are.

Not to be left out, the Chassis Management Controller (CMC) for the M1000E chassis also received an update to version 4.4, which includes a new feature that allows you to clone server settings from a blade, and  assign those same settings to an empty slot, so that the settings will be applied when a new blade is inserted.

Finally, in late June 2013, we released v1.7 of the Dell Management Plug-In for VMware vCenter, which introduces cluster level firmware updates in your Dell / VMware environment and  enables using Active Directory user accounts.

Read about all of these new features and more in the links below that highlight the recent 2013 Dell Systems Management portfolio updates.

If it’s Wednesday, it must be random… optimizing SQL Server workloads for performance using EqualLogic PS Series storage

$

How would you rate yourself for grocery shopping on any particular day? For me, it depends on whether I went grocery shopping prepared or unprepared. For example, if I were coming home from work one Wednesday and made the last-minute decision to stop by the grocery store, I would be unprepared and not have a shopping list. If I remembered and picked up 5 out of 5 items that I needed, I would meet my performance metric for that Wednesday.

On another day, let’s say a Sunday; I go to the grocery store to do my weekly shopping. This time, I need about 20 things and want to be prepared with a shopping list if I can finish my grocery shopping in 20 minutes that is my performance metric for Sunday.

Random vs. Sequential data access pattern is similar to grocery shopping on a Wednesday vs. Sunday. In a sequential workload, blocks are read and/or written in a sequential manner on the disk (e.g., applications such as data warehousing). In a random workload, blocks are read and/or written randomly on the disk (e.g., Online transaction processing).

In the storage world, the performance of these two workloads is measured by IOPS in one case and Throughput in the other, just like the performance measure is different while grocery shopping on Wednesday vs. Sunday.

IOPS (Input Output per second) represents the number of individual I/O operations taking place in a second. IOPS figures can be very useful, but only when you understand the nature of the I/O, such as the I/O size and how random it is.

Throughput (also known as bandwidth) is a measure of data volume over time—in other words, the amount of data that can be pushed or pulled through a system per second. Throughput figures are therefore usually given in units of MB/sec and are more meaningful for sequential workloads since blocks are accessed serially.

 Throughput = IOPS x I/O size

The most common database application workload models are online transaction processing (OLTP) and data warehouse (DW)/Decision Support Systems (DSS). SQL Server DW workloads differ significantly from traditional OLTP workloads in how they should be tuned for performance because of the different I/O patterns inherent in both designs—just like grocery shopping.

Below is a table that summarizes some of the most important differences between OLTP and DW workloads.

DW applications are typically designed to support complex analytical query activities using large data sets. The queries executed on a DSS database typically take a long time to complete and usually require processing large amounts of data. A DSS query may fetch millions of records from the database for processing. To support these queries the server reads large amounts of data from the storage devices. OLTP applications are optimal for managing rapidly changing data. These applications typically have many users performing transactions while at the same time changing real-time data. Although individual data requests by users usually reference few records, many of these requests are being made at the same time. Examples of different types of OLTP systems include airline ticketing systems, banking/financial transaction systems, and web ordering systems.

Since DW workloads differ significantly from that of OLTP systems, it is important to understand the performance criteria’s for each of these and then properly design, size and deploy Microsoft SQL Server on the right storage platforms. Hence, careful planning prior to deployment is crucial for a successful SQL Server environment.

Maximizing SQL Server performance and scalability is a complex engineering challenge as I/O characteristics vary considerably between applications depending on the nature of the access patterns. Several factors must be considered in gathering storage requirements before arriving at a conclusion. A key challenge for SQL Server database and SAN administrators is to effectively design and manage system storage, especially to accommodate performance, capacity and future growth requirements. At Dell, engineers perform benchmark testing to provide storage best practices and sizing guidance that help you plan before you deploy these applications in your environment. Based on the benchmark testing, we recently published two performance based whitepapers focusing on SQL DW and OLTP workloads on EqualLogic PS 6110 and PS6100 storage arrays respectively. To get a deeper understanding of how EqualLogic storage arrays performed on these applications, see these detailed best practices documents:

Best Practices and Sizing Guidelines for Transaction Processing Applications with Microsoft SQL Server 2012 using EqualLogic PS Series Storage  and

Best Practices for Decision Support Systems with Microsoft SQL Server 2012 using Dell EqualLogic PS Series Storage Arrays.

Visit the EqualLogic Technical Content page for a collection of EqualLogic best practice whitepapers.
