Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5 support on Dell PowerEdge servers

Red Hat hasannounced the availability of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5 (RHEL 6.5) Operating System on 21st Nov 2013, kernel version is 2.6.32-431

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5 has been extensively validated onsupported Dell PowerEdge servers

RHEL 6.5 includes driver updates, bug fixes and support for new hardware, For detailed information, please refer to RHEL 6.5 release notes 

Some of the new enablement/features in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5 include

 Networking:

  • Mellanox 40G Ethernet controller support is added in RHEL 6.5
    • Mellanox ConnectX-3 Dual Port 40 GbE QSFP+ Network Adapter is supported by the driver mlx4 (en, core) has latest driver version with RHEL6.5.
    • Dell PowerEdge 12th Generation server R720, R720XD, M620, T620, R820, R620 supported with this Mellanox devices.
  • Full support for Precision Time Protocol (PTP) IEEE 1588
  • PPoE support in NetworkManager
  • Support for Single Root I/O virtualization (SR-IOV) has been added to the qlcnic driver as a Technology Preview.

Storage:

  • Increased support for PCIe SSD (Solid State Drive) storage. Dell PowerEdge 12th Generation server ships with PCI-e SSD devices
  • LVM support for (non-clustered) thinly-provisioned snapshots, previously available as a Technology Preview, is now fully supported in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5
  • The NVMe driver has been added to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5

Virtualization:

  • vCPU hotplug for Linux guests
  • Improved random number generation in guests that allow for greater security.
  • Increase in maximum supported memory for KVM guests.
